Yesterday was the day we celebrate Sveti Miklavž (Saint Nicholas) here in Slovenia. One of the legends we read about him was that he would throw bags of gold through the open windows of families that needed extra money and "supposedly" it would land in the shoes or socks that were being warmed by the fire. So people often give oranges to symbolize the bags of gold. Also, chocolate is a prime-time gift, on sale everywhere! So we got a couple Sveti Miklavž chocolate guys to stuff in their boots with a mandarin.
We started the tradition last year with Abigail and it was fun to continue with it this year with both of the kids. We had the kids set out their boots the night before and put a mandarin and chocolate inside and also added the tradition of giving them a new Christmas book on that day as well. The night before one of our students, Tjasa, came over to babysit for us and also gave the each of the kids a gift and we gave them those as well. Eli was really into his mandarin!
Sencur was also having a special thing for Sveti Miklavž for the kids and Abigail was invited to meet "Sveti Miklavž" and to receive a gift! So Joel decided to take her to that as a "date." They even went out for coffee and hot chocolate afterward!
