Saint Nicholas Day!

One of the traditions we picked up in Slovenia and began doing in 2008 was celebrating St. Nicholas Day, which is December 6th. Last year we bought the Veggie Tales video to explain the holiday and gave it to the kids on that day last year. So this year, we continued our tradition of giving the kids new Christmas books, candy and oranges in their shoes.

Caleb was more into eating the candy, even with the wrappers still on than reading his new book. The other two, however, were very excited about their new books. We have quite a collection now, almost a basket full that we only have out at Christmas time. So adding some new books was extra special!

The Mouse book is a special treat for the kids. We've been checking out books from the Library this year and often check out other ones by this author. Eventually, we'd like to buy them. They're such cute little stories and the pictures are so great! Our favorite so far is, "If You Give a Moose a Muffin"...a special one for our kids because we often have muffins in our house. : ) Although, not for very long!

Later that day, the kids painted their own Christmas trees. I've been wanting to do some painting with them for awhile now but had to figure out a good location! Our house is carpeted all through except the kitchen, bathrooms and this lovely laundry room! The laundry room it was! A perfect place to be worry free about paint spilling or dripping and easy clean-up with a utility sink right there!

I think Abigail's turned out a bit more like a palm tree than a douglas fir...it's cute to see her imagination at work!

So fun we always do St Nick day too. I grew up waking up on the 6th to new slippers, oranges, nuts and candy. Do you have the book "Santa are you for real?" by Harold Meyer? My kids got it this year and spent hours making each other gifts in secret and putting them in each others stockings. They forgot that they would get new slippers by their doors from "Santa" that morning!

How fun, Becky! No, we don't have that book, but I keep hearing how great it is, maybe that will be on next year's list! : )
